Five questions to ask before you start.
Hiring a contractor for your building project is a big decision, and it’s important not to choose on price alone. It may seem like carpentry is all about design and materials, but who you choose to do the work can make all the difference.
Bring these questions with you to your first meeting with JCR — or use them to interview other candidates. Either way, we hope they help you find the right contractor for you.
- Can you tell me more about your business?
Specifically, you’ll want to learn more about the materials they use, the sub-contractors they work with, and all the building options for your project. Also, are they licensed, bonded and insured? Any evasiveness, impatience or vague wording could be a red flag. Trust your instincts.
- What is the average number of jobs you work on at once?
Use this information combined with the amount of professionals working for the company. Every job should have adequate staffing and supervision, to ensure quality work and timely completion. This will also be a good time to get a general idea of how long your project will take.
- Who’s in charge at the job site?
Not that you need to account for every minute of every day, you should know who is responsible for checking for quality and progress. You should then ask to meet that person and get their cell phone number. Also, be sure to ask how long they need before returning your call if you have a question or concern.
- Do you use sub-contractors?
Many construction companies use specialty “subs” for things like plumbing, electrical and even drywall. It’s a good idea to know who your contractor’s subs are, and how long they’ve worked together. Also, make sure your contractor retains ultimate control over all aspects of the job.
- Have you worked on many projects like mine?
This is where you ask to see examples of their work. Ask for pictures as well as drive-bys, if the projects are located close by. If you like what you see, make sure the same crews who worked on those projects will be working on yours.
